However, in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Deepawali is celebrated to mark the day when Goddess Satyabhama and Lord Krishna killed demon Narakasura. “In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Chaturdashi Tithi is the main day during Deepavali and unlike rest of India earthen lamps and crackers are lit during dawn and not after dusk,” Drik Panchang said.

“The festival of Diwali this year coincides with Amavasya—the new moon phase, which begins that afternoon,” India Today TV quoted the spokesperson of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) Sharad Sharma as saying. Thus, according to VHP’s official confirmation about Diwali date, the Diwali festivities will commence on the evening of October 31. Adding more confirmation to the date, Drik Panchang said that Diwali will be celebrated on the Amavasya Tithi of the Kartik month.

Diwali 2024 Date Time and Pooja Muhurat: According to the Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi ends at 6:16 pm on November 1, 2024, but since Laxmi Puja is traditionally performed after sunset when the moon is visible, October 31, 2024, is considered the ideal day to celebrate Diwali, Jagran Josh reported.
Chhoti Diwali, or Naraka Chaturdashi, will then be celebrated on October 30. A day later, on October 31, India will celebrate Diwali with Lakshmi pujan. Govardhan puja will be observed on November 1.

The muhurat will be for less than an hour around midnight on October 30. It will start at 11:39 pm and end 52 minutes later at 12:31 am on October 31. - Hanuman Puja
The Diwali Hanuman puja muhurat will follow the same timings — from 11:39 pm on October 30 to 12:31 am the next day. - Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali
The abhyang snaan muhurat will be from 5:20 am to 6:32 am on October 31. The chaturdashi tithi will begin at 1:15 pm on October 30 and end at 3:52 pm the next day. Choti Diwali is celebrated in the evening, so this festival will be celebrated on October 30. - Kali Puja
The Kali Puja nishita time will be from 11:49 pm to 12:40 am on November 1. The amavasya tithi will begin at 3:52 pm on October 31 and end the next day at 6:16 pm. - Lakshmi Puja and Diwali

Lakshmi Puja: Dos and don’ts on Diwali 2024
Dos of Diwali puja
- Clean your houses and workplace and keep them well-lit, as Goddess Lakshmi favours tidy environments. Decorate your house with lights, lamps, diyas, flowers, rangoli, and candles to bring prosperity.
- It is considered auspicious to keep a Manglik Kalash coated in unpeeled coconut on both sides of the entrance gate.
- Place the altar for the Diwali puja at the northeast corner of your residence or place of business. The idols that are set up for the puja must face east. Puja performers are required to sit with their backs to the north.
- Spread a red cloth over the area where you intend to perform the puja. Place the idols including Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati, and Lord Ganesha on the cloth. Then place the Goddess Shodasha idol in place.
- Put valuable items, such as gold, silver, diamonds, and others, in the puja. This deed may bring good fortune.
- Make sure the Diwali puja is performed during the pradoshkaal.
Don’ts of Diwali puja
- Avoid glass idols and instead buy idols made of clay or silver.
- As Diwali is a celebration in which we welcome Goddess Lakshmi into our homes, we should avoid leaving footwear at the front door.
- Never leave the Diwali puja site unattended throughout the night so that the lamp you light has a constant supply of ghee or oil to burn.
- Do not engage in any money-related activities. Never take out a loan or borrow money over the Diwali festival.
- Do not gift items like leather goods, sharp-edged items, and crackers to anyone during the festival. It is considered inauspicious so keep away from gifting these items.
- It is believed by many to not use utensils made of iron.
- Avoid leaving trash on your doorstep or on your terrace
- Avoid consuming non-vegetarian food or liquor on Diwali.
