ENG vs SA Live Score, T20 World Cup 2024: England win toss, opt to bowl against South Africa in crucial Super 8 clash
England vs South Africa, Super 8 T20 WC Live Score: South Africa squandered a blistering start by Quinton de Kock (65) as England managed to keep the Proteas to 163 for six in their T20 World Cup Super Eights’ Group 2 match in St Lucia on Friday.
With De Kock (68 off 35, 4×4, 4×6) going hammer and tongs to take the scoring rate to nearly 10 an over for most of their first half, England fought back hard with regular wickets courtesy excellent fielding which remained the highlight of their effort.
Apart from De Kock’s fireworks, David Miller’s late resistance, 43 off 28 balls (4×4, 2×6), saved the blushes for SA.
De Kock led South Africa’s rapid beginning with a brutal assault on the English bowlers, particularly on Jofra Archer (3/40) even though Reece Topley kept it tight from the other end in the powerplay.
Having banished a slow start with a six and a four off Mooen Ali to end the second over, De Kock tore into Archer to collect 21 runs with two sixes and as many fours in the fourth over.
Using Archer’s pace, De Kock flicked him off the pads to clear the fine leg and lashed out two powerful hits to midwicket for a six and a four. In between, there was a perfectly executed uppercut for a four which left the English side bewildered.
There was a hint of fortune too for SA. De Kock’s sweep off Adil Rashid towards fine leg was taken by Mark Wood, but one part of the ball was touching the ground, as confirmed by the TV replays.
However, England broke through soon after when Reeza Hendricks charged down to Moeen in the 10th over and Harry Brook took a regulation catch to peg South Africa back.
With run-rate touching 10, it seemed a right move to promote Heinrich Klaasen but it was foiled by Wood’s brilliance.
Wood followed Klaasen with a short ball as the batter moved away. Though Klaasen attempted a quick run, Wood was quick enough to reach the ball and uproot the stumps to catch the wicketkeeper-batter short of his crease.
Archer, who had been on the receiving end, returned to have his revenge but he had skipper Jos Buttler to thank for it. De Kock looked to cut a short ball away from his body but Buttler put in a sensational dive to pluck the ball with his left-hand.
South Africa’s slide helped England regain control and they gained further ground when Rashid had skipper Aiden Markram (1), dragging one on to his wickets.
From 86 for no loss at one stage, South Africa slipped to 113 for four by the 15th over, losing the momentum.
Amid the steady fall of wickets at one end, Miller held his ground and his late charge helped South Africa go past the 150-mark.

Last three overs we had a lot against us but the bowlers had good plans and pulled it off. Message after the powerplay was it got slower. If I am greedy we were 10-20 short especially after the start we got. Not quite played a completely game of cricket but we are on the right track. Quinny has been good for us in the last two games. It was a bit nerve-wracking in those overs but it can happen. The plans were there just the execution wasn’t. I’m grateful that catch (off Brook) stuck.

It (the pitch) definitely doesn’t play the same as night games. It’s completely a different surface compared to the night games. There was a little bit of extra bounce early on. I try to carry on confidence game by game. We bowled really well in the powerplay, and we controlled it very nicely. To be able to defend 160 on a decent wicket is a good effort from us.

England vs South Africa, Super 8 T20 WC Live Score: England will hope a change of format leads to a change of result when they look to take a giant stride towards the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup against South Africa in Saint Lucia on Friday following a thumping loss the last time they played the Proteas.
That Mumbai encounter, seven months ago, was perhaps the lowest point of England’s woeful defence of their 50-over World Cup title.
Following captain Jos Buttler’s extraordinary decision to field first in oppressive heat, England conceded their largest one-day international total of 399 and suffered a colossal 229-run defeat — their biggest reverse by runs in the history of the format.
That was one of six losses in nine games for England as they failed to reach the knockout stage in India.
But it appears Buttler’s men are making a better defence of their T20 World Cup crown, with England overpowering co-hosts the West Indies by eight wickets in St. Lucia on Wednesday.
In chasing down a target of 181 with 15 balls to spare, England emerged with a superior net run-rate to that managed by South Africa in an unexpectedly tense 18-run win over the United States.
Another win for England in St. Lucia against the Proteas would all but guarantee a semi-final place.
Several of the players that featured for both England and South Africa in India will be involved again on Friday.
But England opener Phil Salt, who made a blistering unbeaten 87 against the West Indies, and in-form fast bowler Jofra Archer had no part in that dire defeat in October.
This tournament has marked Archer’s return to international duty after a lengthy injury absence, with the Barbados-born quick in the air when England were being walloped at the Wankhede Stadium.
“Honestly, I didn’t get to watch that one as I was heading back to the UK. I know it wasn’t a great tournament for the boys but we have put it past us,” Archer told a pre-match press conference on Thursday.
“We’ve just won what is probably going to be one of the toughest games of the tournament…It’s a tough group and South Africa is the same challenge as any other team, one to six is packed with batters, so it doesn’t really change.
“We just need to come up with another plan that works.”
Archer certainly had one of those while bowling a remarkable 16th over to West Indies’ dangerman Nicholas Pooran, the leading run-scorer in the tournament.
He did not concede a run off five of his six balls and also dismissed Pooran.
By contrast, Salt hammered Romario Shepherd for 30 in the same over of England’s innings.
“It was everything that we talked about in the bowling meetings, just one of the times you nail it,” said Archer. “I’m really glad that over was probably the turning point.”
England now face another big-hitter in Heinrich Klaasen, whose brutal hundred was the cornerstone of South Africa’s victory in Mumbai.
“We’re looking forward to finding our swings again and hopefully we can cash in against England,” said Klaasen.
“But they’re extremely dangerous side. They’ve got a lot of match-winners so we need to be aware of that and play our big moments better than they do.
“Hopefully we can continue our trend of playing good cricket under pressure and it will be fantastic if we can go two out of two and close a semi-final spot for ourselves.”
